Almost every first Tomaree plan fails or succeeds here. Grade 5 stairs are not a boardwalk. Official notes treat the 27 km walk as a 2–3 day trip.

Tomaree Head Summit
hardShort, very steep formed walk from near Zenith Beach / Shoal Bay to lookouts about 161 m above the Port Stephens entrance. North platform: harbour and islands (Cabbage Tree, Boondelbah, Broughton — Gould’s petrel nesting reserves). South: Zenith, Wreck and Box beaches, Fingal Island and the lighthouse. Picnic table at the top. Optional Fort Tomaree guns on the way down.

Coastal Walk 27 km
hardOne of NSW’s connected coastal walks, publicly promoted from about 2023. Starts at Tomaree Head / Shoal Bay, finishes at Birubi Point Aboriginal Place, Anna Bay. Retraces ancient Worimi routes; sea-eagle totem waymarks. Official 2-day example: Day 1 summit area to One Mile (~18 km, 7–8 hrs); Day 2 One Mile to Birubi (~9 km, 3.5–4.5 hrs). Map segments: Summit–Fingal ~7 km; Fingal–One Mile ~11 km; One Mile–Birubi ~9 km. Separate official day-walk: Shoal Bay to Fingal Bay 5 km one-way, Grade 3, 1.5–2.5 hrs from Zenith (not the same figure as the ~7 km summit map segment).

Fort Tomaree
moderatePaved walk on the lower slopes of Tomaree Head to 1941 east-coast defence gun emplacements. Interpretive signs. Optional link up to the summit walkways. Zenith Beach below is a sanctuary zone — no collecting or fishing.

Coastal hazards that actually apply here
- Grade 5 summit — many steps; pavement slippery when wet.
- Limited mobile reception. 000 needs coverage — download Emergency+.
- Strong rips on unpatrolled beaches. Swim between flags only (Fingal SLSC, southern One Mile, Birubi in season).
- Do not walk the Fingal spit to Fingal Island — boat only.
- Heat and fire danger; no snow; no crocodiles.

Is there an entry fee for Tomaree National Park?
Tomaree visitor-info (re-checked 12 Sep 2026) does not list a vehicle day-entry fee. Walking is free. Camping at Samurai Beach is separate (official page: no camping fee; a $6 booking fee). Guided NPWS tours, if you book one, are another fee again. Re-check NPWS passes-and-fees if you need the statewide vehicle-fee list.
How long from Sydney or Newcastle?
From Newcastle allow about 1 hour via Nelson Bay Road. From Sydney typically 2.5–3 hours each way in normal traffic (official notes often say about 3 hours to Shoal Bay). That is a typical drive, not a time we clocked ourselves. A “half day on the ground” from Sydney is usually a full day out.
What should I do first on a first visit?
Most first-timers who can handle stairs start at Tomaree Head Summit (Grade 5, 2.2 km return, 1.5–2 hours). Add Fort Tomaree (Grade 3) on the way down if legs allow. Do not stack the 27 km Coastal Walk onto a first half-day.
