Guide updated · long-form planning notes — verify live conditions with NPWS
Deep practical notes for Tomaree visits — Zenith parking, Coastal Walk logistics, village bases and Grade 5 honesty. Written like an operator’s manual, not a brochure. Always verify track conditions, closures and safety with NSW National Parks before you travel.
How to use these: parking Plan B when Zenith is full · village-base article before you book a bed · 27 km day-trip warning if you are tempted · Samurai 4WD camping realism before you pack a tent · Fort Tomaree if Grade 5 is the wrong product. Pair with a printable itinerary when you want a minute-by-minute structure. Printable planner PDF / checklist PDF.
Best for: People booking a bed before they understand the 27 km one-way
Nelson Bay / Shoal Bay puts you at the Tomaree Head start. Anna Bay / Birubi puts you at the finish. Pick the base to match the one-way, or you will pay for it in taxis.
Start of the Coastal Walk: Shoal Bay / Zenith / Tomaree Head.
Finish: Birubi Point, Anna Bay.
Nelson Bay has denser fuel, food and medical. Anna Bay is the southern logistics village.
Best for: Fit people who still have to respect clocks
Official timing is 2–3 days. Day 1 alone is ~18 km and 7–8 hours. Why trying the whole 27 km after a Sydney dawn start usually fails, and which shorter cuts still count as a win.
Official suggestion is 2–3 days, not a day trip.
Summit–Fingal ~7 km, Fingal–One Mile ~11 km, One Mile–Birubi ~9 km.
Cut at Fingal or One Mile and you still had a real Tomaree day.
Best for: People with binoculars who may not want a boat
Land-based whale watching from Tomaree Head, Fishermans Bay, Iris Moore, Boat Harbour, Birubi and Barry Park — official season window, no guaranteed sightings.
Official whale window on park pages: May–November.
Lookouts listed in visitor notes include Tomaree Head, Fishermans Bay, Iris Moore, Boat Harbour, Birubi, Barry Park.
Cruises are optional commercial add-ons on /tours/ — not NPWS park entry.
Best for: Self-sufficient 4WD campers and Coastal Walk overnighters
The only NPWS campground in Tomaree National Park: 4WD access, no camping fee, $6 booking fee, clothing-optional zoning, portable toilet required. Official bookings only — never affiliated.
Official: no camping fee; $6 booking fee (checked 26 Aug 2026).
4WD via Gan Gan Road and the access trail only. No 2WD workaround.
No toilets, water, BBQs or bins. Clothing-optional at camp and nearby beach only.
Best for: Mixed-ability groups, knees, under-8s, anyone who read Grade 5 honestly
Fort Tomaree is the official Grade 3 heritage walk on the same precinct. Iris Moore and Fishermans Bay cover whales without 161 m of stairs. Skipping the summit is not a failed Tomaree day.
Fort Tomaree: Grade 3, 2.5 km return, 1.5–2 hrs, paved, still steep, accessibility “Hard”.
Iris Moore is the easy picnic/whale node on official notes.
Do not treat Zenith as a flagged family swim — sanctuary zone, rips, unpatrolled.
