Day-tripping the full 27 km Tomaree Coastal Walk is usually a bad idea — here’s the realistic cut
Official timing is 2–3 days. Day 1 alone is ~18 km and 7–8 hours. Why trying the whole 27 km after a Sydney dawn start usually fails, and which shorter cuts still count as a win.

Best for: Fit people who still have to respect clocks

Grade 4 here is mostly about length. The internet will show you a sunrise-to-Birubi Strava screenshot. Official NPWS still prints 7–8 hours for Day 1 before you even start Day 2. Add Zenith parking, heat, and a 3-hour Sydney reverse clock.
The maths that does not care about your fitness watch
Sydney → Shoal Bay is typically 2.5–3 hours. Official Day 1 is 7–8 hours. Day 2 is 3.5–4.5 hours. That is not a day trip; that is a weekend. Newcastle locals can attempt more — still verify daylight and heat.
Realistic cuts that still count
Summit + Fingal (~7 km of the walk after or instead of the 2.2 km return summit). Fingal to One Mile as its own day. One Mile to Birubi as the cultural finish. Each has a road and a bus story.
Two official distances on the south end
Standalone Birubi–One Mile page: 7.5 km, Grade 3, 4–4.5 hours. Coastal Walk map: about 9 km as Grade 4 Day 2. NPWS local alerts re-checked 12 Oct 2026 no longer list Kingsley Beach track works on the Boat Harbour stretch. Plan a village bail-out, not a pride finish.
FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Could a very fit runner do 27 km in a day?
Possibly. Official guidance still says 2–3 days. This site will not tell you to ignore heat, rips, or the last bus. If you try it, it is your risk, your water, and your extract plan.
Where should I cut if I started late?
Fingal. Then the road. One Mile is a second-day hinge, not a late-afternoon sprint after a Sydney dawn.
