First time at Tomaree Head: Grade 5 is not a lookout stroll
What a first Tomaree National Park visit should actually include — summit logistics, Fort Tomaree substitute, and what to skip.

Tomaree looks small on the map. The stairs are not. Pack like a short hard walk, not a beach car-park wander.
Official: 2.2 km return, Grade 5, 1.5–2 hours, many steps, ~161 m. Fitness matters even though NPWS lists no experience required. Paved sections are slippery when wet. Not walked.
The default first visit
Summit if the group can. Guns on the way down. Fingal flags if patrol is on. Home. That is a complete Tomaree day. The 27 km walk is a different holiday.
If Grade 5 is the wrong product
Fort Tomaree is the Grade 3 paved heritage walk on the same precinct — still steep in places, official accessibility “Hard.” Iris Moore and Fishermans Bay are lookouts without the stairs. Skipping the summit is not a failed visit.
Fees and alerts (do not merge systems)
Walking is free. Visitor-info (26 Aug 2026) does not list a vehicle day-entry fee. Samurai camping is a $6 booking-fee product. Guided NPWS tours, if running, are a third system. Check local alerts. On 12 Oct 2026 the Kingsley works notice was no longer listed; the Fingal spit was still impassable on visitor-info.

Nelson Bay / Shoal Bay puts you at the Tomaree Head start. Anna Bay / Birubi puts you at the finish. Pick the base to match the one-way, or you will pay for it in taxis.

- Skip the Grade 5 summit: Fort Tomaree and lookouts that still count
Fort Tomaree is the official Grade 3 heritage walk on the same precinct. Iris Moore and Fishermans Bay cover whales without 161 m of stairs. Skipping the summit is not a failed Tomaree day.
