Best for: People with binoculars who may not want a boat
Unofficial guide — always verify track conditions, closures, fees and safety with NSW National Parks. Place photos are Wikimedia Commons / CC where credited — not official NPWS imagery and not live conditions.
Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park fees and NSW National Parks bookings are never affiliated.

Humpbacks pass this coast in the published season. You can watch from the same lookouts you already walked. Sightings are luck plus patience — nobody can promise them.
Land first
If anyone in the group cannot do Grade 5, skip the summit and use Fishermans Bay or Iris Moore. Take binoculars. Do not lean over unfenced rock for a better photo.
Ranger walk vs commercial cruise
NPWS Tomaree coastal walking tour (re-checked 12 Oct 2026): the 2 Oct 2026 date has passed. Next dates on the official page are 7 Jan, 16 Apr, 9 and 16 Jul, and 1 Oct 2027, 9.30–11.30am, Boat Harbour depot. Adult fee still listed at $20. Book only on NPWS — never affiliated here. Commercial whale boats are a different ticket on /tours/.

Do I need a boat?
No. Boats are a different day with a different budget. Official park walking still needs alerts, water and a parking plan.

Nelson Bay / Shoal Bay puts you at the Tomaree Head start. Anna Bay / Birubi puts you at the finish. Pick the base to match the one-way, or you will pay for it in taxis.
