3–5 hours on the ground (+ drive time)

Half-day: Tomaree Head Summit

Best for: First visit from Newcastle or an early Sydney start with limited daylight

One honest Grade 5 summit, optional Fort Tomaree on the way down, village food, and a protected reverse clock — without pretending you can also walk to One Mile.

Success is the view from ~161 m and getting the car out of Zenith without a parking argument. Extra kilometres are off this plan.

From Newcastle this is a comfortable half-day. From Sydney, a half-day on the ground is often a full calendar day (2.5–3 hours each way).

Always check NSW National Parks alerts. Not walked by site authors.

Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NSW National Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

  1. Night before

Pack and set the reverse clock

Stick to Tomaree Head Summit. Add Fort Tomaree only if you still have legs. Screenshot alerts. Download Emergency+. Water, hat, sturdy shoes.

  2. Arrive early

    Zenith / Shoal Bay parking

Lower or upper Zenith lots; Shoal Bay Road overflow. If full, switch to the Plan B article — do not park illegally.

  3. 1.5–2 hrs

    Summit out-and-back

Grade 5, 2.2 km return. North then south platforms. Picnic table if you carried food. Turn around if pavement is a skating rink.

  4. Optional

    Fort Tomaree guns

Grade 3 paved heritage walk on the descent. Skip if knees or weather have had enough.

  5. Buffer

Village food in Shoal Bay / Nelson Bay

Protect the drive home. Swim only at a patrolled beach if that was pre-agreed — not an impulse at unpatrolled Zenith.
