Whale season: lookout hopping (May–Nov)
Best for: Binoculars, not a boat ticket by default
Guide updated · verify NSW National Parks the morning you go
Official notes flag whale watching May–November from Fishermans Bay, Iris Moore, Boat Harbour, Birubi, Barry Park and Tomaree Head. Sightings are never guaranteed.

You can whale-watch from land without buying a cruise. A cruise is an add-on if the sea state and budget fit — listed on /tours/, official NPWS guided walks first if they are running.
Summit still Grade 5. Do not drag grandparents up 161 m “because whales.” Use Fishermans Bay / Iris Moore.
Official season window on park notes: May–November. Sightings are never guaranteed. Not walked.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NSW National Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Morning
Fishermans Bay or Iris Moore
Lower-effort lookouts. Toilets/picnic at Iris Moore on official notes.
Optional upgrade
Tomaree Head if legs and parking allow
Binoculars on the north platform. Same busy Zenith car park as any weekend.
Afternoon
Birubi Point
Southern vantage plus cultural site. Swim only if flags are up.
Packing
- Binoculars
- Wind shell
Product searches: gear hub.
Parking & access tips
- Boat Harbour and Fishermans Bay can be kinder than Zenith at cruise-coach o’clock.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Guaranteed sightings — nobody can sell those honestly
Extra tips
Lookout order when Zenith is ugly
- Iris Moore / Fishermans Bay first (toilets, picnic, lower stairs).
- Birubi Point if you are already south. Summit last, and only if parking and legs remain.

- Tomaree Head Summit walkShort, very steep formed walk from near Zenith Beach / Shoal Bay to lookouts about 161 m above the Port Stephens entrance. North platform: harbour and islands (Cabbage Tree, Boondelbah, Broughton — Gould’s petrel nesting reserves). South: Zenith, Wreck and Box beaches, Fingal Island and the lighthouse. Picnic table at the top. Optional Fort Tomaree guns on the way down.
- Morna PointOfficial park materials flag Morna Point for wildflower displays. Treat it as a Boat Harbour / southern-peninsula add-on, not a substitute for Tomaree Head. Confirm the live walking-track page for distance and status.
- Birubi Point to One Mile (Coastal Walk south)The southern Coastal Walk segment and the Birubi Point Aboriginal Place finish. Cultural artwork and audio on official materials. Patrolled Birubi beach in season. Slot Canyon lookout sits on this stretch.
