Fingal Bay
Guide updated · verify NSW National Parks the morning you go
Village-edge beach, SLSC patrol in season, Coastal Walk lunch stop, and the Fingal spit that you must not walk. Easy exit if Zenith is packed.
- Best for: Swim (flags), families, Coastal Walk Day 1 lunch, Plan B when Zenith is full
- Time: 1–3 hours for beach + village; longer if walking the Coastal Walk segment
- A few minutes from Shoal Bay via Marine Drive / Government Road. Do not treat the spit as a walking track to the lighthouse.

Village beach, not a wilderness bay
Fingal is where the Coastal Walk first hits a real village: toilets, food, and a flagged swim if the season and patrol are on. That makes it a sensible place to stop if the group did the summit and is done.
The lighthouse on Fingal Island is a mainland view, not a walk. Boat only.
The spit is not a track
Official visitor-info (re-checked 12 Oct 2026): the Fingal sand spit to Fingal Island / Point Stephens Lighthouse is currently impassable — seawater, deep channels and swell. Do not attempt to walk across in any direction. Access to the island is by boat only until further notice.
Separately, NPWS local alerts close the Lighthouse Keepers’ Cottages Ruins to pedestrian access for public safety. Do not enter. A pretty photo from the mainland is the whole product.
Coastal Walk cut vs standalone day walk
The official Coastal Walk map lists about 7 km from the summit area to Fingal. The standalone Shoal Bay to Fingal Bay walking-track page is 5 km one-way, Grade 3, 1.5–2.5 hours from Zenith. Both are official — confirm signs. Either is a legitimate “one extra” after a summit, not a warm-up for One Mile.
Highlights at a glance
- Patrolled swim in front of Fingal Beach SLSC (seasonal — between the flags)
- Coastal Walk map ~7 km Tomaree Head–Fingal; standalone Shoal Bay–Fingal day walk is 5 km Grade 3 from Zenith
- Views toward Fingal Island / Point Stephens lighthouse (boat access only)
Practical tips
- Check SLSC patrol times before you promise a swim.
- Barry Park (further along) has lookout, toilets and water on the official Day 1 notes.
- If Zenith is full, starting here is an honest Plan B — not a failed day.
Facilities & services
- Village shops and holiday parks
- SLSC precinct (seasonal)

Wreck Beach
moderateOfficial NPWS: 2 km return, 30 min–1 hr, Grade 4. Start from Verona Road in Shoal Bay, uphill onto a fire trail, then through coastal angophora forest to a small cove visible from Tomaree Head. FAQ — Fingal
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Can I walk to Point Stephens Lighthouse?
No. Official advice is not to walk the Fingal spit. The island and lighthouse are boat access only. Visitor-info (re-checked 12 Oct 2026) says the spit is currently impassable. Ruins on the island are closed to pedestrians.
Is Fingal a good Plan B when Zenith is full?
Yes. You still get a village, a seasonal flagged swim, and a signed Coastal Walk cut. You do not get the Grade 5 summit view unless you return later.
