Why this is the default first stop
If someone says they are “doing Tomaree,” they usually mean the steep pull from Zenith / Shoal Bay to the summit platforms: Port Stephens to the north, Zenith and Fingal Island to the south. That concentration is the gift and the problem — you get the view, and you share the car park with everyone else who left Nelson Bay at the same time.
Treat Tomaree Head as your first stop, not a list to finish. Do the summit in decent weather, add Fort Tomaree on the way down if legs allow, then decide whether Fingal or a village lunch is the rest of the day. The 27 km Coastal Walk is a different trip.
Parking, toilets, reverse clock
Official visitor notes: lower or upper Zenith Beach car parks, with Shoal Bay Road overflow on busy days. Mixed paid and free all-day options — read the signs. A toilet is at the Shoal Bay boat ramp, about a four-minute walk from the track entry back toward Shoal Bay.
Arrive early on weekends, school holidays and summer. If both Zenith lots are full, execute Plan B (Fingal, One Mile, or a later summit) rather than blocking emergency access. See the Zenith car-park article.
What belongs on the same clock
Summit + Fort Tomaree is one honest half-day for a fit group. Summit + a flagged swim at Fingal is a full day if you protect the drive home. Summit + 18 km of Coastal Walk is not a first afternoon — that is the two-day itinerary.
Wreck Beach is a separate Grade 4 walk from Verona Road, not a surprise add-on after a late summit. Zenith is a sanctuary zone — collecting and fishing rules differ from Fingal’s flagged beach.
Not walked — verify
These notes are planning from official NPWS pages (re-checked 26 Aug 2026). They are not a diary of our own walk or a live closure feed. Check alerts the morning you travel. Limited reception: 000 needs a signal; Emergency+ before you leave Wi-Fi.

FAQ — Tomaree Head
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is Tomaree Head suitable for kids?
The summit is Grade 5 — very steep with many steps. Mixed-ability groups often do Fort Tomaree (Grade 3) or lookouts from the car-park precinct instead. Barrier discipline still matters on rock platforms.
Do I need a walk permit?
No self-guided walk permit is required. Guided NPWS tours are booked and paid separately through official channels.
Where do I park if Zenith is full?
Official overflow is Shoal Bay Road when signs allow. Next honest moves: Fingal Bay, One Mile, or skip the summit. Illegal verge parking is not Plan B — see the Zenith article.
Is there a vehicle day-entry fee here?
Tomaree visitor-info (checked 26 Aug 2026) does not list a vehicle day-entry fee. Walking is free. Samurai camping is a separate $6 booking-fee product. Re-check NPWS passes-and-fees.
