Things to do in Tomaree National Park

Rule of thumb: the summit, plus at most one extra. The 27 km walk is a different trip. Official links first. Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park fees and NSW National Parks bookings are never affiliated.

  1. 1 · Grade 5 · 1.5–2 hrs · Zenith parking

    Tomaree Head Summit

Grade 5, 2.2 km return, ~161 m views over Port Stephens and the island line. Start here if the group can do steep steps.

  2. 2 · Grade 3 · heritage · same car parks

    Fort Tomaree (WWII guns)

Grade 3 paved walk to 1941 east-coast defence emplacements. The better walk if Grade 5 is too much.

  3. 3 · 27 km · sea-eagle totem · not a one-day job

    Tomaree Coastal Walk

27 km one-way, Grade 4, 2–3 days official. Village bail-outs. Finish at Birubi Point Aboriginal Place.

  4. 4 · Swim between flags only

    Beaches (flags vs rips)

Fingal SLSC, southern One Mile and Birubi can be patrolled in season. Many other beaches are unpatrolled with strong rips. Zenith is a sanctuary zone.

  5. 5 · Binoculars · official season window

    Whale watching lookouts (May–Nov)

Land-based from Tomaree Head, Fishermans Bay, Iris Moore, Boat Harbour, Birubi and Barry Park. Sightings never guaranteed.

  6. 6 · Cultural site · Anna Bay

    Birubi Point Aboriginal Place

Coastal Walk finish. Worimi cultural artwork and audio on official materials. Stick to what those sources say.
