Tomaree trails & lookouts

Start with a clear summit vs 27 km walk decision. Tomaree Head + Fort Tomaree covers most first visits. Distances, grades and times below are planning ranges — always confirm on NSW National Parks and park alerts. Weather, closures and stair status change.

Decide before you lace up

  • Heritage / family: Fort Tomaree Grade 3 — still steep in places, not a boardwalk.
  • Moderate coastal sections: Birubi–One Mile, Morna Point, Wreck Beach — village bail-outs exist.
  • Hard days: Grade 5 summit, or Coastal Walk Day 1 (~18 km) — one hero only, early start, extract plan.

Stacking two hard walks plus the postcard lookout is how a first visit usually goes wrong. Pick the table row that matches your energy, then open the trail guide for getting-there detail.

Trails FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

What is the best first walk in Tomaree National Park?

Most first-timers who can handle steep stairs start at Tomaree Head Summit (Grade 5, 2.2 km return). Fort Tomaree (Grade 3) is the easier heritage walk. The 27 km Coastal Walk is a 2–3 day trip, not a first-afternoon add-on. Always verify with NSW National Parks.

How hard is Tomaree Head?

Official Grade 5: very steep and difficult, many steps, formed track, 1.5–2 hours. Fitness matters even though NPWS lists no experience required. Paved sections are slippery when wet.

Can I do the full Coastal Walk in a day?

Official timing is 2–3 days. Day 1 alone is ~18 km and 7–8 hours. A Sydney day-trip 27 km is usually a bad idea — see the Plan B article.

Why do Birubi–One Mile distances disagree?

Both figures are official. The standalone Birubi Point to One Mile page is 7.5 km, Grade 3, 4–4.5 hours. The Coastal Walk map lists about 9 km for that Day 2 segment of the Grade 4 27 km. Confirm signs on the day.

Where does Wreck Beach start?

Official page: Verona Road, Shoal Bay — 2 km return, Grade 4, 30 min–1 hr. Not the Zenith summit lots. Official swim note points to Box Beach, not Wreck.
