Fort Tomaree walk
Guide updated · verify live track status with NSW National Parks
Paved walk on the lower slopes of Tomaree Head to 1941 east-coast defence gun emplacements. Interpretive signs. Optional link up to the summit walkways. Zenith Beach below is a sanctuary zone — no collecting or fishing.
Do not pair: Do not treat Fort Tomaree as a substitute swim beach day at unpatrolled Zenith.
Turnaround: Return on the pavement when anyone is done. Same car park.
- Assuming “easy” means flat.
- Grade 3 — some steep sections, paved, slippery when wet
- 1 hr 30 min – 2 hrs (official)
- 2.5 km return (official NPWS)
- Effort: moderate
- Best for: WWII heritage, mixed-ability groups who will skip Grade 5, add-on after the summit
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on NSW National Parks before you go.

Where you start
Zenith Beach / Tomaree Head precinct
Same parking story as the summit. Official accessibility note lists “Hard” for wheelchair access — do not promise a pram-friendly bunker tour.
How to get there
- Park at Zenith upper/lower or Shoal Bay Road overflow.
- Same 2WD sealed approach from Nelson Bay.
How to do it (step by step)
- Walk the paved loop to the guns and read the signs.
- If energy remains, take the elevated walkways toward the summit — that is a different grade.
What to expect
Fort Tomaree is the WWII guns under the summit. Grade 3, 2.5 km return, paved, still steep in places. It is a good add-on on a summit descent, or the better walk when Grade 5 is too much for a mixed group.
Same car parks, different grade
You share Zenith / Tomaree Head parking with the summit crowd. Official accessibility listing is “Hard” — do not promise a pram-friendly bunker tour. Interpretive signs cover the 1941 east-coast defence story. Optional elevated walkways toward the summit are a different grade again.
Zenith Beach below is a sanctuary zone: no collecting or fishing. A flagged family swim belongs at Fingal SLSC (seasonal), not as a reward at the guns.

Extra tips
- Binoculars for birds and whales.
- Combine with summit only if the group still has legs.
